Know What You're Choosing

What Are Programs of Interest in St. Johns County?

Career Academies are only one type of Program of Interest. SJCSD currently includes several kinds of specialized high-school programs under that larger category.

Don't compare names. Compare paths.
The better question is not simply whether an academy sounds interesting. Ask what choosing that program could mean for your student's school, schedule, electives, commute and four-year high-school experience.
Before You Fall in Love With a Program

Four SJCSD rules families should understand first.

These are current district policies, not hypothetical concerns.

1

You may not be eligible for the out-of-zone version.

SJCSD states that students may not apply to a Program of Interest at an out-of-zone school if that program also exists at the student's zoned high school.

2

Applying does not guarantee placement.

Schools determine available seats. SJCSD uses a weighted lottery when determining placement, and students may be placed on a waiting list when capacity is reached.

3

Out-of-zone transportation is the family's responsibility.

Parents or guardians of students attending an out-of-zone school are required to provide transportation to and from the school.

4

Leaving the program can mean leaving the school.

If an out-of-zone student drops or is no longer enrolled in the Program of Interest connected to the waiver, SJCSD requires the student to return to the home-zoned school at the start of the new semester once credit has been awarded.

Look Beyond the Presentation

Before choosing an academy or high school, look at the whole picture.

The program

What courses will your student actually take? How long is the sequence? Does the subject genuinely fit their interests?

The school

Would your student still want to attend this high school if the academy were removed from the equation?

The freshman schedule

How could today's course choices affect later math, science, advanced coursework and elective options?

Schedule space

What else does your student want room for, such as band, art, ASL, athletics, world language or another elective?

The commute

If the school is out of zone, is the daily transportation plan realistic for your family for multiple years?

Changing direction

Your 13- or 14-year-old may change interests. Understand what that could mean before committing to the path.
