November deadlines are here. What matters now?

November 1 and 2 bring another major wave of early application deadlines. Seniors need to finish well and verify materials. Younger students have different priorities, including high school and academy planning for 8th graders.

Seniors are approaching another major application deadline. For younger students, the focus is on steady progress, not manufactured urgency.

12th Grade

Seniors
Finish the right application, then verify the file

UF's non-binding Early Action application deadline is November 1, with required materials due November 8. Georgia Tech's Early Action 2 deadline for non-Georgia applicants is November 2, with separate requirements for documents and self-reported scores. Check each college's official instructions for the selected application round. Submit before the final minutes, then follow the applicant portal checklist.

11th Grade

Juniors
Use first-quarter grades to make one adjustment

Nothing in admissions is urgent this week. Identify one class that needs a better plan before semester grades are set. That might mean teacher help sessions, a different study routine, or a conversation about missing work.

10th Grade

Sophomores
Choose consistency over adding more

There is no application task to complete. Focus on one activity, job, responsibility, or interest worth continuing this quarter. Sustained involvement matters more than a crowded list of short-lived commitments.

9th Grade

Freshmen
Check the high-school transition

No college-planning deadline needs attention. Review first-quarter grades together and ask: What would make the second quarter run more smoothly? Choose one manageable change.

8th Grade

High School & Academy Planning
Start exploring high school options

Academy nights and high school planning are approaching in St. Johns County. Now is a good time to explore career academies and programs available to your student. Look beyond the program names. Consider the courses, interests, and commitments involved. No decisions need to be made this week.

The one thing we'd do this week

Make a four-line deadline check.

For every college with a November deadline, write down four things:

  1. Application deadline
  2. Separate materials deadline
  3. Whether the applicant portal has been received and activated
  4. Whether the college marks the file complete

Use the college's official website and portal, not a general deadline list. A short check now can prevent a submitted application from being left incomplete.

A Common App green checkmark means a section is filled in. It does not mean the college has received every required material.

After submission, the applicant portal is where students should confirm transcripts, academic records, scores, and other requirements. Allow for processing time, but follow up when something remains incomplete beyond the college's stated window.

Not every grade needs an admissions checklist.

Younger students do not need to rush into senior-year tasks.

For grades 8–11, strong academic habits, meaningful involvement, and thoughtful planning matter more this week than adding unnecessary tasks.
