Campus Visit: Holy Cross College in Notre Dame, Indiana
Okay we have to be honest with you. Before we visited Holy Cross College, we could not have told you much about it. And we are guessing you probably can't either. That's kind of the whole point of this post.
Because here's what we've learned after years in education and working with families navigating this process: the schools that don't get talked about enough are often the ones that deserve a second look. Holy Cross College in Notre Dame, Indiana is very much one of those schools.
So here's what we actually saw.
First, let's get the obvious question out of the way
Yes, it's in Notre Dame, Indiana. Yes, that Notre Dame. Same zip code, basically same campus, same golden dome in the distance. Holy Cross College sits right on the tri-campus alongside the University of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College.
Founded in 1966, it's a small Catholic liberal arts college, and when we say small, we mean it. We're talking an intimate, everybody-knows-your-name kind of environment. If your student has ever said "I want a big university feel but I'm scared of getting lost," Holy Cross is a genuinely interesting answer to that problem.
The thing nobody tells you: the Notre Dame access is real
This is the part that stopped us in our tracks.
Holy Cross students don't just live near Notre Dame. They have actual access to it. We're talking clubs, organizations, facilities, career fairs, and libraries. Holy Cross students can join Notre Dame clubs, march in the Notre Dame band, and sit in the student section on game day.
Let that sink in for a second. Your student gets a small college experience AND Notre Dame football Saturdays. That is not nothing. That is actually a really big deal for a lot of families.
The student we talked to mentioned joining a Notre Dame organization as casually as if it were completely normal. Because for Holy Cross students, it is.
The faith piece: here's the honest take
Holy Cross is a Catholic institution and it doesn't hide that. There are 80-plus Masses per week across the tri-campus. The faith tradition is visible and present.
But here's what we want parents to know: it's not in your face. If faith is central to your family, you will feel right at home. If it's not your thing, it genuinely does not appear to be required or pushed. The students we spoke with who were not Catholic described the environment as respectful rather than pressured.
That's worth knowing before you visit. Go in with accurate expectations and you'll be able to evaluate it clearly.
Who this school is actually for
We want to be straight with you because that's kind of our whole thing at LaunchPoint.
Holy Cross College is not for every student. If your kid wants a major research university with 50,000 students and a sprawling Greek life scene, this is not it.
But if your student is someone who:
Thrives in small classes where professors actually know their name. Wants a values-driven community without feeling like they're missing out on a bigger college experience. Is drawn to Notre Dame's culture and environment but may not be a Notre Dame admit. Or is still figuring out who they are and would benefit from a tight-knit community that gives them room to do that.
Then Holy Cross College deserves a serious spot on your list.
The one question to ask on your own visit
Ask a current student what a typical Tuesday looks like. Not the weekend, not a game day. Tuesday. The answer will tell you more about the real rhythm of life there than any information session ever will.
Our honest bottom line
We left impressed in a quiet way. Not flashy. Not a school that's going to show up on every top ten list. But a school with a genuinely distinctive value proposition that most Florida families have never considered.
If you're building a college list and you have a student who fits the profile above, put Holy Cross College on your radar. It's worth the look.
